I recently read a couple of articles regarding performing in a setting where your audience isn't entirely focused on you. The first one isn't so much an article as it is a comment by Frank De Blase, of City Newspaper in Rochester on April 12.
And speaking from experience, it's hard to play your heart out for small crowds sometimes. But it's even harder when whatever joint you're filling up with music leaves the goddamn TVs on. That's just plain rude.
The other is a rather long article from The Washington Post that Laurie Leenhouts sent me. They put Joshua Bell, one of the world's most respected violinists, in a Washington, DC subway station in plain clothes with his case open in front of him to receive tips. He played some of the most difficult pieces around. It was interesting to see how people reacted while they were distracted by other concerns.
